Cellular Therapy, Regenerative Medicine, and Clinical-Grade Islet Cells

Cellular therapy is a forerunner in the promising field of regenerative medicine. In an experimental procedure called islet transplantation, islet cells (islets of Langerhans) are taken from a donor pancreas and transferred into a person with type 1 diabetes. Once implanted, the beta cells in these islets begin to produce and release insulin.

Named after these affected insulin-producing beta cells, Beta-Pro LLC, was formed to facilitate a functional cure for diabetes. We believe cellular therapy is critical in the fight against diabetes and have found a way to harvest donor organs that would otherwise be discarded for the benefit of the diabetes research community.

Beta-Pro Partners with IIAM to Obtain Organs from Donors for Diabetes Research

Nearly 25 percent of gathered donor pancreases are suitable for whole organ transplantation. In order to obtain organs from donors, Beta-Pro partners with the International Institute for the Advancement of Medicine (IIAM), one of the largest recovery networks in the world for the acquisition of donated human tissue for research and education. After successful procurement:

  • Beta-Pro works closely with the University of Virginia Center for Cellular Transplantation and Therapeutics, subsequently capturing this surplus of unwanted organs for islet cell isolation, processing, expansion, and testing.
  • Beta-Pro then distributes customized islet cells to medical centers and other organizations for diabetes research. These clinical-grade islets are manufactured in a Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) “clean room” facility approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

At present, Beta-Pro is making good use of unwanted organs that would otherwise be discarded.  We are supplying clinical-grade human islets and human stem cells to numerous organizations for the purposes of research and bettering the lives of people with diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.
