Paul B. Manning
Beta-Pro President & CEO
Founder Paul B. Manning is the president and chief executive officer of Beta-Pro.
He is also the founder, president, and chief executive officer of PBM Products,
LLC, the first company to launch store-brand infant formulas in the United States.
Today PBM markets and distributes infant formula and nutritional products to more
than 20,000 retail locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, South
Africa, and China. The PBM family of companies specializes in manufacturing, distributing,
and marketing consumer food, nutritional, and pharmaceutical products.
Before forming PBM, Mr. Manning held key sales and marketing positions with leading
pharmaceutical companies and founded several companies, including Able Laboratories
and Manfam, Inc., two companies that developed and distributed prescription and
over-the-counter products to major chains in the United States.
Aside from his entrepreneurial work, Mr. Manning and his wife, Diane Manning, founded
the Focus to Cure Diabetes Foundation, which has played an integral role in establishing
an islet cell transplant program at the University of Virginia (UVa). The nonprofit,
volunteer organization was instrumental in helping UVa perform the state’s first
islet cell transplant and continues to raise money to support diabetes research.
When it comes to diabetes, the Mannings have long put their money where their hearts
are. The couple, parents of two children with type 1 diabetes, has donated several
million dollars to diabetes research efforts with the aim of curing the disease.
The Mannings plan to continue funding diabetes research at UVa and have leveraged
PBM to make progress on the diabetes research front. In fact, PBM recently introduced
a line of diabetic products to help people better manage diabetes. A portion of
the proceeds from the sale of the products will be donated to diabetes research.
In 2002, Mr. Manning was named Virginia Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst &
Young. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, where he earned a B.S.
in microbiology.
